Business Inventories

Business inventories refer to the total U.S. business sales and inventories or Total current-dollar sales and inventories for the manufacturing, wholesale, and retail sectors of the economy.

Importance:

Traders see how retail inventory numbers will affect interest rates. If inventories are growing faster than sales, it usually shows that the economy is slowing down. A sluggish economy means lower interest rates, which is a decline in the dollar or dollar bearish.
If both sales and inventory are growing at the retail, wholesale and manufacturing levels, it is considered bullish in dollars.

Background:

The Business Inventories report covers all three phases of the manufacturing process, namely, manufacturing, wholesale and retail comprehensive sales and inventory statistics. By the time the report is released, however, all three components of its sales and the two components of its inventory will have already been reported.
Since retail inventory is effectively the only new piece of information that contains a business inventory report, the report itself causes some turmoil in the market. Occasionally, however, retail inventories fluctuate considerably to reflect changes in the overall inventory profile, which can affect the GDP outlook. At times when this happens, the report is known to show a small response from the market.
In short, although the market is increasingly interested in futures statistics, these aggregate sales figures are historical and say little about personal consumption, but they are still a good coincidence.
The information in business inventories is really more useful to market economists than it is to other market participants.
